The company says it’s targeting men who are seeking a new life in their mid-30s and for people with children.
In the ad, a man dressed as a firefighter gives his wife a fire-fighting drill.
The woman responds with, “I’ve never had a fire drill.”
The man, who appears to be in his 40s, explains to his wife, “You’re just a baby, and it takes two.”
And that’s where it gets interesting: The ad ends with the man standing with his hands raised in a gesture that looks like the old firefighter’s salute.
“He’s telling her, ‘Don’t give up on me.
I’ll do what I’ve got to do,'” said Safeway vice president of public affairs Todd McShane.
A spokesman for Safeway did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Safeway says the ad will be airing at Safeway stores across the country from Tuesday to Thursday.
